Kesha’s ensemble of “Praying” at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards was the most powerful moment of the night and is a significant event in the revitalized women’s movement.
“Praying” is the singer’s emotional story about healing from sexual harassment, and verbal and physical abuse. Kesha’s performance was watched by more than 19 million viewers at the height of #MeToo and Time’s Up – two campaigns by ordinary women and celebrities around the globe who want to stop the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment in the workplace. In addition, the official music video has been watched more than 75 million times on YouTube.
At the Grammys, the performance was introduced by Janelle Monaé:
We come in peace, but we mean business. And to those who would dare try and silence us, we offer you two words: Time’s up.
We say time’s up for pay inequality, time’s up for discrimination, time’s up for harassment of any kind and time’s up for the abuse of power. Because, you see, it’s not just going on in Hollywood, it’s not just going on in Washington, it’s right here in our industry.
And if I may add to her speech: It’s not just going on in Hollywood, Washington, and the music industry, but in organizations of all sizes, communities, families and relationships – whether they’ve been broadcasted on the news or not.
This is why “Praying” is the new anthem for the women’s movement. #MeToo and Time’s Up aren’t just about exposing men who have abused power. These campaigns are about empowerment. When Kesha sings, “Oh, but after everything you’ve done, I can thank you for how strong I have become,” she is encouraging women to rise above negativity and embrace themselves – just as she has.
So, thank you Kesha for sharing your story and singing a message that resonates with all women of a certain age. Thank you for letting us know that even if we don’t want to share our story we’re not alone.
If you’ve never listened carefully to the song lyrics, I highly recommend you read them here:
Well, you almost had me fooled
Told me that I was nothing without you
Oh, but after everything you’ve done
I can thank you for how strong I have become‘Cause you brought the flames and you put me through hell
I had to learn how to fight for myself
And we both know all the truth I could tell
I’ll just say this is “I wish you farewell”I hope you’re somewhere prayin’, prayin’
I hope your soul is changin’, changin’
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, prayin’I’m proud of who I am
No more monsters, I can breathe again
And you said that I was done
Well, you were wrong and now the best is yet to come
‘Cause I can make it on my own, oh
And I don’t need you, I found a strength I’ve never known
I’ll bring thunder, I’ll bring rain, oh
When I’m finished, they won’t even know your nameYou brought the flames and you put me through hell
I had to learn how to fight for myself
And we both know all the truth I could tell
I’ll just say this is “I wish you farewell”I hope you’re somewhere prayin’, prayin’
I hope your soul is changin’, changin’
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, prayin’Ah sometimes, I pray for you at night, oh
Someday, maybe you’ll see the light
Whoa oh oh oh, some say, in life, you’re gonna get what you give
But some things only God can forgiveYeah! (I hope you’re somewhere prayin’, prayin’)
I hope your soul is changin’, changin’
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, prayin’
